The Employment Committee of South Branch Emergency Services, Inc is pleased to announce the promotion of per diem EMT/FF Ryan Nelson to the position of Full Time EMT/Operations Lieutenant. He will be replacing Lt. Ryan Clancy who departed SBES in August for a position in the Murfreesboro Tennessee Fire Department. Lt. Nelson is no stranger to SBES! He joined our team through the Clinton First Aid & Rescue Squad as a per diem EMT back in October 2006. Ryan has served many roles here at SBES, including Per Diem, Part Time and Full Time EMT, volunteer on our Rescue Company as a Rescue Tech/Firefighter, as well as many other organizations. Ryan got his start in Emergency Services following in both his parents footsteps back in 2002, joining the Hampton Fire Company. Since that time he has served many, many departments, in several states, including the Milford-Holland Rescue Squad, Hampton Emergency Squad, East Whitehouse Fire Department, St Lukes EMS, Hunterdon Medical Center Security, and the list can continue. He is also Past-Chief of Hampton Emergency Squad In his spare time, the few moments he isn't working, Ryan enjoys spending time with his son Chase traveling to street fairs, race tracks, backyard farming and camping. We welcome Ryan back to the full time team, now as an officer here at SBES! The decision means Hampton, Glen Gardner, and Bethlehem Township residents will continue to receive excellent emergency care with faster response times despite a decline in volunteers.Hunterdon County, NJ...Hampton Emergency Squad, which provides emergency medical care in Hampton, Glen Gardner and Bethlehem Township, will merge with South Branch Emergency Services on January 1, 2022, leaders from both organizations announced. The resulting organization will operate under the South Branch name and provide coverage to all areas currently served by the two entities. “We’re very excited about it,” said Hampton Chief Penny Tampier. “The people are going to get better service.” Residents served by Hampton are already familiar with South Branch, whose EMTs provide daytime coverage from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Currently, Hampton volunteers respond to nighttime emergencies from home, heading first to the station and then to the call. After the merger, on-duty squad members will respond directly to emergencies. “Response times should be much quicker,” Tampier said. A decline in volunteers – gradual for years, and recently abrupt – led Hampton Emergency Squad leaders to seek the merger, Tampier said. The gradual decline in volunteer numbers and daytime availability is a problem faced by all volunteer-based emergency services, and what led Hampton to seek a daytime coverage partnership nearly two decades ago. Then in 2021, Hampton’s volunteer roster dropped sharply, from 20 EMTs. Some volunteers moved or went back to college. “We want to be able to give the same high level of care that we were always able to in the past, the level of care that people expect from us, and this merger allows that to happen” stressed Chief Tampier. Two Mergers in Two Years Creating a Regional ApproachThe Employment Committee of South Branch Emergency Services, Inc is pleased to announce the appointment of EMT/FF Christopher Querry to the new position of Full Time EMT/Rescue Lieutenant. Lt. Querry joined SBES through the Clinton First Aid & Rescue Squad in 2014, as a volunteer candidate, obtained his EMT in our EMT training program, and moved up to the position of Rescue Captain last year. This year he has been promoted to this newly created full time position. He will take his post on November 1st. Chris follows in his parents footsteps of Emergency Services, and joined the Clinton Fire Department as a junior firefighter back in 2013. He is currently employed as a per diem FF/EMT with the City of Lambertville Fire Company, the Lambertville-New Hope EMS, Quakertown Fire Company and both the the Hunterdon County Emergency Services Training Center as well as Somerset County Emergency Services Training Academy Lt. Querry looks forward to becoming our first full time Rescue Officer, and hopes to continue building the dynamic and diverse program that SBES delivers to our communities. We welcome Chris back to the officer team and now as a full timer here at SBES! South Branch Emergency Services (SBES) is led and largely staffed by volunteers who donate their skills and time to save lives, but what they do is not free! From ambulances and rescue trucks to air masks and bandages, SBES has many expenses to cover and needs the help of the community to do so. “We are asking community members to consider making a tax-deductible donation,” said Chief Frank Setnicky. “Whatever a household can afford will help us afford the apparatus, equipment, and supplies we need to respond to medical and other emergencies.” Last year, South Branch’s 159 team members responded to 3,736 calls for help in Clinton Township, the Town of Clinton, High Bridge Borough, Lebanon Borough, and portions of Franklin Township and Union Township, amongst several others. Residents of those townships should have received information about donating in the mail. Donations can also be made online at www.sbes365.org. SBES volunteers donate more than 30,000 hours annually to on-call shifts, response, and training. Even at minimum wage, that’s equivalent to more than $250,000 in savings to taxpayers. “Their generous contribution is one leg of a stool, but the stool can’t stand without it’s other legs: municipal funding, ambulance billing, and financial support from our community,” said SBES President Sharon Burham. “Community support also shows the volunteers who take time away from their family, friends, hobbies, and sometimes even sleep to help their neighbors,” she said. Severe Thunderstorm & Tornado WarningsOn Saturday Evening, after being alerted to the possibility of a Tornado and Severe Thunderstorms, the call came into SBES to assist our partners in the Flemington Area when they got inundated with requests to rescue folks from cars stuck in rising water. Flemington-Raritan First Aid & Rescue Squad initially requested our Special Services 365 high-water unit to assist with multiple water entrapped persons on Rt 202/31 in the area of Everitts Road. This was just the first of 12 separate incidents that our department assisted with in Raritan Township, East Amwell Township, Franklin Township and Clinton Township. Units responding included Water Rescue 365-2 along with Marine 365-3 and an inflatable unit, Utility 365-1 who picked up another boat from Flemington Rescue's station to assist at calls, and the Special Services. Eleven members staffed these units, while an additional 9 personnel continued to staff our primary stations for both EMS & additional Rescue calls. After clearing the initial calls, the units were staging in the Flemington Borough area along with units from West Amwell Fire, Whitehouse Rescue, Flemington's units and the Hunterdon County Office of Emergency Management. Units operated not only at the 12 dispatched calls, but multiple other assists along the way as they came upon other units. In total more than 2 dozen drivers who found themselves stuck in flash flood conditions were safely removed from vehicles and brought to drier land. Our Water Rescue Technicians train locally through several private companies as well as with the Hunterdon County Emergency Services Training Center, usually in the Delaware River, the closest "simulation" that we can produce to these types of conditions. Two years ago, four rescuers from South Branch Emergency Services travelled to the NY State Preparedness Training Center where they have a full swiftwater rescue simulator for specialized training and preparedness for events like this weekend. Unfortunately, it is one of very few in the Country where First Responders can be trained in a safer & controlled environment, and one that our agency has been a supporter of building for many years. If you would like information about joining our Water Rescue Team, or becoming an EMT with our agency, please visit www.SBES365.org From Monday 7/12 to Friday 7/16 Operations Lt. Ryan Clancy, FF/EMT Chris Querry, FF/EMT Jason Mayer (Sponsored by Clinton Fire Dept.) and former member Sarah Raper (Sponsored by Whitehouse Emergency Squad) attended the Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings (IRTB) Class at New Mexico Tech Energetic Materials Research and Training Center in Socorro, NM. Class participants reviewed the response protocols for terrorist bombing incidents, how certain types of devices are made, how those devices actually explode and interact with the environment. This class is funded by FEMA and Homeland Security which allows participants to take the class without paying out of pocket. Thank you to all the members that gave up their week to expand their knowledge to respond to these type of incidents. Attached below is a video that shows all the institutes that allow first responders to take classes with federal grant funding. The last of our 2021 high school graduates! Congratulations to Samantha Ruby on her graduation from Delaware Valley Regional High School! Sami joined in February of 2020 and got her EMT with us back in the Spring. Sami will be attending the University of Tampa majoring in Nursing! She received multiple scholarships including both Clinton Sunrise Rotary as well as the Flemington Rotary. From Sami, "I won a lot of scholarships hugely due to the hours I have spent with SBES as a volunteer and the memories I’ve made and experience I’ve gained as a medical provider. Thank you so much to SBES and everyone I have worked with for helping me get to where I am!" Congratulations Sami and Good Luck in the Fall!
